Explore the rich history of North Yorkshire and visit the famous North York Moors National Park. Visit historical landmarks and watch as history comes to life at the Ryedale Folk Museum.

The Historic Yorkshire tour will take you ove the rolling hills of the North York Moors which is home to the largest area of heather moorland in the England. The Moors are one of the most important historical areas in Britain in terms of religion, farming, mining, fishing and smuggling.

It has more ancient scheduled monuments than anywhere in the country including, standing stones, stone crosses and burial mounds.

Explore an open-air history museum, coastal towns and historic sites such as Rievaulx Terrace, all the while enjoying unrivalled views along the Yorkshire coast and for miles across the Yorkshire.


Leaving York we make our way to the historic garden Rievaulx Terrace home to two temples and art exhibitions. Here you will have chance to explore the area and emerse yourself in the history of the Georgian era, you will also see the 12th-century Rievaulx Abbey.

From Rievaulx Terrace we travel over the beautiful moors through quaint villages on our way to the Ryedale Folk Museum. Here we can get a chance to see history brought to life as we walk through restored medieval buildings such as an Elizabethan manor, thatched cottages and an iron age round house.

We then head off the ‘Beaten Track’ through more of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park where there will be plenty of chances throughout your day to capture memorable photos.

We head through the moors to Whitby, a traditional seaside town. On our way we head passed Ralphs Cross, an ancient stone cross which stands nine feet tall, and Danby Beacon which provides incredible views over much of the iconic moorland landscape.

When we arrive in Whitby there are plenty of places for lunch - the towns fish and chips being best in England according to locals. There are a number of things to see and do such as visiting the dramatic ruins of Whitby Abbey, which was the inspiration for the novel ‘ Dracula’ or even taking a stroll along the harbour with its quaint shops.

Leaving the delightful seaside town we make our way to the charming town of Pickering, known as the ‘Gateway to the Moors’ and the southern terminus of the North York Moors Railway. There will be a chance to explore the station and see this picturesque market town. Here you can discover the historic Church and its medieval wall painting and explore the beautiful town.

After we have seen some of Pickering we head back to York, the last stop on our historic journey. We return to the city through more of the national park and enjoy the scenic views of famous landmarks such as Castle Howard and the Hole of Horcum as your memorable tour of the Yorkshire country side draws to a close.
